Desire Obtain Cherish, Mouthwatering Matters, 2013
Adderall, Prozac, Viagra, and acrylic on canvas, 72 x 39 in.
|
|
|
The Los Angeles location of KM Fine Arts presents Desire Obtain Cherish: #undertheinfluence, an
exhibition of over 20 works selected by the artist, comprised of his renowned pill works, paintings, resin, and
mixed media sculptures. Desire Obtain Cherish (American, b.1975), born Jonathan Paul, is a graduate of Parson's
School of Design. He uses popular imagery to engage the viewer and ultimately tempt him or her to give into
primal urges and basic instincts. #undertheinfluence invokes imagery related to sex, drugs, pop culture,
Hollywood, and the Los Angeles myth of material success leading to personal satisfaction.
|
|
The underlying theme of excess is captured by Desire Obtain Cherish's celebrity portraits, which feature
celebrities who have died from an overdose. At a distance, the works look to be traditional paintings. It is not
until the viewer gets closer that he or she can see that the work is a collection of individually wrapped pills.
These extraordinarily labor-intensive works also allow Desire Obtain Cherish to impart his basic philosophy that
art is a vehicle of communication, not theory. Desire Obtain Cherish: #undertheinfluence is on view at
the Los Angeles location of KM Fine Arts until May 11, 2013.

Ayyam Gallery
“I do not paint out of luxury, and do not seek beauty; I paint as an attempt to reason with the world and
myself.” -Sadik Alfraji
Ayyam Gallery London is hosting I Do Not Feel That I Am Free, Iraqi artist Sadik Alfraji’s
(b.1960) first solo show in the United Kingdom. With themes of displacement, isolation, and existential uncertainty,
Alfraji’s works feature solitary figures against stark backgrounds, often in profile. Created with layers
of charcoal and India ink, the figures maintain a unique, dense quality, further separating them from their often
all-white backdrops. A distinct feature of these austere portraits is the presence of singular, detailed elements
that take the image out of the two dimensional realm and into something much more human—be it a gnarled
hand withered by age or the eyes gazing directly at the viewer. Alfraji, who was born in Baghdad but currently
works in the Netherlands, has works displayed in public and private collections around the world, including at
the National Museum of Modern Art, Baghdad, the Royal Association of Fine Arts, Amman, and the Novosibirsk State
Art Museum, Russia. Sadik Alfraji: I Do Not Feel That I Am Free will be on view until April 27, 2013, at
Ayyam Gallery’s New Bond Street location.

"In Michel Comte images art and reality collide with each other. They are brutal and poetic - dazzle and
unsettling. The feelings they evoke are painful and complex: food for the mind and soul." -Geraldine
Chaplin on Michel Comte
One of the most prolific and important Contemporary fashion photographers, Michel Comte (Swiss, b.1954),
is the subject of a new exhibition at Camera Work gallery in Berlin. The exhibition, which spans more than
two decades of the photographer’s career, includes over 100 works, and features portraits of iconic
beauties, such as Cindy Crawford, Helena Christensen, and Gisele Bundchen, as well as celebrities,
including Anthony Hopkins and Mike Tyson. A highlight of the exhibition is the rare gelatin silver
photograph of former French first lady and model Carla Bruni. Michel Comte will be on view until
June 1, 2013.

Al Held
Alphabet Paintings: Exhibition View
|
|
Cheim & Read
Monumental pieces deserve grand exhibition spaces; in Al Held: Alphabet Paintings, Cheim & Read in New
York City presents seven immense paintings by artist Al Held (American, 1928—2005). Accompanying the works, which
are all selected from private collections, is a full-color catalogue featuring an essay by critic and academician
Robert Storr. The paintings on view represent Held's move away from Abstract Expressionism formality toward
geometric hard lines and two-dimensional shapes. The sheer size of the works amazes the viewer and alters his or
her surroundings. Upon close inspection, the thick build up of acrylic paint below the polished surface
reiterates Held's constant reassessment of structure.
"I just don't want to express myself, I want to say something." -Al Held
Al Held: Alphabet Paintings will be on view until
April 20, 2013.
