What’s on view around the world
From extraordinary objects to explorations of the American West, this week we’re checking out gallery exhibitions from London to Lugano, Switzerland.
In The World of Extraordinary Objects, London’s October Gallery brings together artists from around the world to play with the capacity of art to mesmerize. These three-dimensional works are made from a variety of media—from recycled paper and books to high-tech communication cables—and present commentaries on our involvement in society today, on both a personal level and as a whole. Artists Gyeong Yoon An, Jukhee Kwon, and Remy Jungerman, who are all showing at October Gallery for the first time, present their innovative creations among a retinue of established October Gallery artists, such as Romuald Hazoumè, Laila Shawa, and Gérard Quenum. The World of Extraordinary Objects will be on display from February 21 to April 13 at 24 Old Gloucester Street, London, UK.

Tom Wesselmann’s Great Americancan Nudes
Track the performance of Great American Nudes, the celebrated series by the American Pop artist, Tom Wesselmann (1931–2004). Wesselmann began this series in the early 1960s, incorporating patriotic images with iconic and everyday imagery from magazines, advertisements, and consumer culture. This series earned Wesselmann the attention of the art world, including the support of Henry Geldzahler, who introduced Wesselmann to other prominent Pop artists. The Great American Nudes series has outperformed the S&P 500 in the last decade, and has been a leading force in the Wesselmann market. In May 2008, Great American Nude no. 48 became the most expensive Wesselmann ever sold at auction, bringing in US$10.6 million.

“Art has always shaped me. Books also fascinated me, they gave me another view of the world, but from the time I was a very small child, I wanted to be an artist. My body of work represents a life time observation and engagement with my own particular milieu: pop icons, landscapes, gardens, trash, my family, and the things around me that are visually dynamic.”
