TUSK TRUST has supported wildlife conservation, communities, and education in Africa since 1990. The charity’s 50 projects, which range across 17 countries, are designed not only to deliver protection for endangered species, but also to help alleviate poverty and promote sustainable development amongst the rural communities who live alongside wildlife. HRH The Duke of Cambridge became the Royal Patron of Tusk in 2005, and he has since then taken a keen and active interest in the charity’s work.

Welcome to this evening’s Tusk Modern art auction. If you would like to bid in the live auction, please fill out the form handed to you on arrival along with a bidding paddle and its number. Please position yourself in the live auction theatre so that the auctioneer can see you, and raise your paddle as the bid increments are announced. If you are successful, you will be approached by a volunteer, who will take your contact details and give you a receipt. This receipt should be presented at the payment desk after the live auction. The auction will begin promptly at 8:00 p.m.

Silent Auction
The silent auction will run throughout the evening up until 9:30 p.m. We will sound a five minute warning beforehand. Simply add your name, telephone number, and bid amount on the sheet next to the lot. An announcement will be made with a five minute warning for those wishing to get one last bid in to secure their favorite piece. Good luck!

Absentee Bidders
If you are unable to attend the event but would like to place a bid, please contact TUSK on info@tusk.org.

Payment
If you are successful in the live auction, your payment will be processed that night, once the volunteer has recorded your personal information. If you are the top silent auction bidder at the end of the night, please pay at the reception desk before leaving. If you leave before paying, we will contact you and take your payment by phone. Payment for all works can be made by checks payable to Tusk Trading Ltd (no charity checks), bank transfer, or credit card.

Delivery & Collection
All works will be removed at the end of the event. Once payments have been received and cleared, buyers will be able to contact Martinspeed, who have generously agreed to deliver artworks within London at a nominal fee, and deliveries beyond London at a special charity rate by arrangement directly with them.

Auction Terms & Conditions
By entering to bid at this charity auction, all participating bidders accept all terms and conditions, and if a winning bid is placed, they will be legally bound to honor their bid. Guide prices are intended as a guide for prospective bidders. All lots may realize prices above or below the guide. As with all auctions, any works whose reserve is not met will remain unsold. All lots are sold as seen. Due diligence has been conducted as thoroughly as possible; Tusk Trust accepts no liability for items purchased.

Glossary of Art Terms & Techniques
Every work here tonight is by an international artist whose work is highly coveted so you can be sure of buying a valuable item. Below is a brief, general list of terms you may see here tonight for your guidance whilst browsing the show. Most importantly, proceeds will benefit the vital work TUSK undertake, so be brave AND HAVE FUN!

What is a print?
Buying prints and works on paper is where most collectors start. To put it simply, unlike a painting, prints are made by drawing on a surface such as stone or metal plate. An image of this drawing can then be printed.

Etching
Etching starts with covering the metal plate with a waxy coating which the artist scratches, exposing the metal beneath. The plate is then immersed in acid, which ‘bites’ into the exposed lines, preserving the drawing. The coating is then removed, and the plate is inked and printed.

Screen Printing
Most screen prints are made up of a number of layered stencils; each stencil allows a different color to be printed through a screen made of silk. Ink is then dragged across the screen using a squeegee, forcing its way through the un-masked areas onto the paper beneath.

Collage
Collage is simply a technique of composing a work of art, usually by pasting to a surface various materials that are not normally associated with one another, such as newspaper clippings, parts of photographs, and theatre tickets or other fragments. This process creates new associations and meanings.
